Creating Space for Renewal

Every work of art begins with something we rarely celebrate: the space to create it.

For many women artists, that space is increasingly difficult to find. Financial insecurity, caregiving responsibilities, and the pressure to constantly produce leave little room for reflection or creative risk, particularly for women of color, LGBTQ+ artists, artists with disabilities, and those working outside major cultural centers. Too often, the artists shaping culture are expected to do so without the support their work requires.

At the Omega Institute, a retreat center on more than 250 acres in New York’s Hudson Valley, making space is itself the intervention. Since 1977, more than one million people have come to Omega seeking renewal and connection. Thanks to a transformational gift from Women Moving Millions member Sara Hinkle, that tradition now extends to a new generation of women artists.

Hinkle’s gift invests in the artist as much as the art. Rather than tying support to a particular outcome, the residency gives women the freedom to step away from the demands of production and reconnect with the creative practice itself. That emphasis on wellbeing and creative sustainability reflects a broader vision of what artists need to build enduring careers, grow as leaders, and bring their ideas into the wider world.

What emerges from that time cannot be predicted, and that is part of its value. A residency may lead to a new work, a collaboration, or an entirely different direction in an artist’s practice, with its influence continuing long after she leaves Omega. Sometimes the most catalytic investment in art is in creating the conditions for it to exist at all.

Catalyzing Women’s Creative Power is a three-year initiative offering fully funded four-week residencies for emerging and mid-career women artists, particularly those from historically marginalized communities. Residents receive a stipend, travel support, studio space, and materials, removing financial barriers that too often determine who has the opportunity to create. More importantly, they receive something less tangible but equally essential: time to think and imagine.

The residency reflects Omega’s belief that creativity and wellbeing are deeply connected. It brings together the Institute’s commitment to holistic healing, environmental stewardship, and women’s leadership in a setting where artistic practice is nourished by community and nature. Here, art is not treated as separate from social change, but as one of the ways change becomes possible.
