Art Catalyst Fund

The Women Moving Millions Art Catalyst Matching Fund was created from a simple but powerful belief: art has the power to shape culture, and culture has the power to shape what is possible. By supporting women artists and the organizations that champion them, the Fund invests in the stories, ideas, and creative leadership that help build a more just, inclusive, and equitable world.

The Fund was made possible through the extraordinary vision of WMM member Maja Kristin, who created this opportunity to invite the WMM community to move resources boldly and quickly to one of society’s most important catalysts for change: women artists. Her $10 million matching investment inspired members to mobilize an additional $10 million, unlocking a total of $20 million to strengthen an artistic ecosystem so women creatives can thrive.

Designed to embrace art in its many forms, the Fund spans documentary film, media and journalism, writing and fellowships, museums and exhibitions, photography, community-based arts programming, music, and theater. It reflects the many places where art lives and the ways artists stand at the forefront of movements — building bridges, opening hearts and minds, and expanding how we see the world.

From emerging artists to established cultural institutions, the Fund supports projects that expand opportunity, elevate women’s leadership, and amplify voices that have too often gone unheard. It recognizes the capacity of creative expression to foster healing and challenge assumptions, inspiring new ways of seeing ourselves and one another. Whether preserving overlooked histories, supporting artist mothers, documenting lived experiences, or reimagining public narratives, these projects help shift conversations about gender, power, and democracy in ways that reach far beyond the arts.

The grants that follow reflect the breadth of that vision. Together, they demonstrate how members supported individual artists and organizations while strengthening the cultural infrastructure that makes lasting social change possible. Across disciplines, communities, and generations, they reveal what can happen when philanthropy recognizes art as an essential force for advancing gender equity and leverages the power of community to move much needed resources with efficiency and creativity.

Maja Kristin

As women’s rights and democratic institutions came under increasing attack, Maja Kristin saw an opportunity that others had not yet imagined: invest in the artists, storytellers, and cultural institutions capable of redefining how we see the world.

Who Tells Our History?

Museums are often described as places that preserve the past. In reality, they do something far more powerful: they decide which stories are collected, whose lives are celebrated, what future generations inherit.

The Art of Care

Motherhood, caregiving, and creative work all require time, imagination, and emotional energy. Yet the systems that support artists have rarely been designed with caregivers in mind.

Every Life Has a Story

Everyone wants to know their life matters. Sometimes, that begins with having someone listen. That belief inspired Women Moving Millions member Lily Zhou to found Life Story Club in 2019.
