Atoms come together to form molecules because of their electrons. Electrons can join (or bond) atoms together in two main ways. When two atoms share electrons between them, they are locked together – bonded – by that sharing. This round of introductions is playful and creative. Reminder: Brevity is the key to communication. What is community and why does it matter? More importantly, what makes an impactful community, and what is your role and unique contribution? What’s your wildest dream for the impact of this community could make? Lisa Witter will facilitate a dynamic discussion amongst us.

Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress, Mariska Hargitay, Founder & President of the Joyful Heart Foundation plays Lieutenant Olivia Benson on the long-running NBC series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. In 2004, in response to the thousands of letters she had been receiving from survivors of sexual assault, Mariska was inspired to found the Joyful Heart Foundation, whose mission is to transform society’s response to sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse, support survivors’ healing, and end this violence forever. At the heart of their advocacy work is their campaign to end the backlog of hundreds of thousands of untested rape kits sitting in storage facilities across the United States. In May, Mariska released her first documentary film, I AM EVIDENCE, which highlights the reasons behind the alarming national rape kit backlog. The film explores how the justice system serves survivors, by providing firsthand accounts from four women about their assaults and the hours, weeks, months, and years following their evidence collection. Moderated by Media Pioneer and Curator of TED Women Pat Mitchell, Mariska will join in a conversation with Kym Worthy, Wayne County Prosecutor, Maile Zambuto, CEO, Joyful Heart Foundation and Regina Scully, Founder and CEO of Artemis Rising Foundation, Executive Producer, I AM EVIDENCE and WMM Member to discuss what is being done to end the backlog and what this film will mean for survivors across the United States as they continue to seek healing and justice. Recent research in social psychology and neuroscience has made huge strides in understanding how automatic processes in the brain shape our perceptions, our actions and our decision-making. Alexis McGill Johnson, Executive Director, Perception Institute will take us deep into the concepts around bias, give us insight into how we can override our biases and disrupt commonly held assumptions about race and gender that limit us. Participation in sports has a profound effect on the confidence of girls in the classroom to the success of women in the boardroom. In fact, Ernst & Young found that 94% of women in the C-Suite had played sports at a collegiate level. Globally, however, women and girls face major barriers to participation in sport. These barriers reflect the status and role of women in different societies. Moderated by Minky Worden, Director of Global Initiatives, Human Rights Watch this conversation with Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, Athletic Director, Pleasant View School, Motivational Speaker & Basketball Trainer, Julie Foudy, Two-time Olympian Gold Medalist & Former US Women’s Soccer Team Captain and Liz Wolfson, Founder, Girls Athletic Leadership School examines the powerful role sports are playing to develop strong female leaders, build resilient communities, and advance women’s rights globally. Believe it: Women and girls across the globe suffer disproportionately from the effects of climate change and lack of access to sustainable clean energy. Rachel Kyte, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All, and Vien Truong, CEO of the Dream Corps, will share powerful stories of the very real risks women face from climate change, why natural disasters are more likely to threaten women than men, and how access to sustainable energy is essential to the liberation of women and girls. You’ve probably heard them singing in the subway around NYC or under the famous arch in Central Park. Peace Industry Music Group’s acoustic division called Infinity’s Song was formed by three of the Boyd children; Abraham, Victory and Angel. Their dynamic powerful voices are rich and colorful, their music is authentic and full of compassion. Their repertoire contains both original pieces and covers. You can hear their gospel background in their music and they have an ability to bring music alive that draws crowds to listen.

When women and girls have the tools to plan and space their pregnancies, there is a multiplier effect: women and their babies are healthier; children are better educated; and over time, entire economies become more prosperous. Multiply that across millions of families and access to contraceptives is one of the greatest anti-poverty innovations the world has ever seen. But currently there is an estimated 225 million women worldwide who are not receiving the information and services they need to plan their families. This conversation with Seema Jalan Ignacio, Executive Director, Universal Access Project & Policy, United Nations Foundation, Dr. Pauline Muchina, Director of Healthy Families, Healthy Planet, United Methodist Church and Ugochi Daniels, Chief Humanitarian Response, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will explore how access to contraceptives can have a transformative effect on women, their families and the economic development of communities. Introduced by Akruti Desai, Senior Program Officer, Philanthropic Partnerships, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Dr. Caroline Heldman, Associate Professor, Politics, Occidental College examines the history and meaning of the gender binary, and analyzes the rise of fluidity of gender in contemporary U.S. society. She unpacks differences between sex, gender, and sexuality to better understand how they are distinct and how they interact to shape common notions of “gender.” Dr. Heldman also focuses on the ways in which young Americans are expressing their gender to demonstrate how gender roles are socially constructed. Through a critical analysis of how we construct “masculinity” and “femininity,” we’ll see how gender norms are currently harmful and can be improved to enable healthier, happier living for everyone. After a decade of quiet independent releases, the singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and poet MILCK confidently carried a generational anthem in the form of “Quiet.” Originally penned in 2015 with frequent collaborator Adrianne Gonzalez, the song provided a clarion call for people of all races, creeds, and colors who have suffered and survived gallantly in the face of trauma, trials, and tribulations. Every organization needs financial resources to do their work, but too many organizations rely on old models of fundraising to sustain themselves. What does it take to build a community where great people come together to fund a great mission? In this workshop you’ll learn how to leverage the power of community to be a more effective donor, fundraiser, and champion for the issues and organizations you care about most.

We will discuss the “how to’s” during a frank conversation with amazing entrepreneurs and the WMM members that invested in them.

Workshop #5: Our Brains on Race & Gender: Deep Dive
Gender shapes our experiences in many ways, and it never operates in isolation – our race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, class, and other identity characteristics affect how we navigate the world. In the media, workplaces, communities, schools, and homes, issues of gender, race, ethnicity, and class can be polarizing. We see extraordinary promise in our movement toward gender equity, but with each new “first,” we also see backlash. As we work through the challenges of everyday life, the obstacles created by gender inequity can seem like insurmountable barriers. The Perception Institute inspires people to live their values. Learn about how to look at gender through an intersectional lens and how it can impact philanthropy from an authentic space with context and understanding.
